SEO Guarantees and Refunds: Which Ones Are Worth Anything

Ranking guarantees are a red flag, and 1 of the 3 refund policies we read ends when work starts. What a useful SEO guarantee looks like, and ours.

Elmrank editorial4 min readLast reviewed

A small business owner on r/SEO cancelled a freelancer over zero return, and the freelancer answered by threatening to work for a local competitor. The post drew 136 comments and 83 points. No refund policy covers that, and it's a good reminder of what a guarantee is for: getting out cleanly when the work isn't paying.

Guarantees, ranked by what they're worth

What the agency offersWhat it actually meansWorth it?
"#1 rankings guaranteed"A promise nobody can keep. Google tells you to "find someone else" if an SEO guarantees first placeWalk away
Refund before work startsOne policy we read: refund only before the team begins, "typically within 24 hours of payment." After that, none "under any circumstances"Nearly nothing
Refund of undelivered workYou get money back for a link or deliverable they couldn't secureFair, but it covers delivery, not results
No guarantee, long commitment6 months at WebFX, a 12-month engagement at Digital ElevatorThe opposite of a guarantee: you carry the risk

What real refund policies say

We read the refund and cancellation terms of several SEO providers on October 14, 2026. Three patterns came up.

Refunds end when work begins

AI Optimize's policy is the bluntest: "Once work on a purchased service has started, no refunds will be issued under any circumstances." It adds that "dissatisfaction with search engine algorithm changes out of our control does not qualify for a refund."

Results are excluded by design

iSEO Agency says SEO results "cannot be guaranteed because search engines, advertising platforms, social networks, AI-powered search systems, competitors, market conditions, algorithms, and other external factors are outside our direct control." Its policy also says that cancelling a monthly service "does not automatically create an entitlement to a refund for the current billing period."

Delivery is refundable, results aren't

1stpage Agency will "refund or credit the undelivered portion" if it can't secure an agreed placement, and lets you cancel a subscription by email with no cancellation fee. It doesn't guarantee "rankings, traffic, indexation, citations, leads, revenue, or permanent placement" unless a package says so.

None of this is unusual or dishonest. Search engines do change, and agencies don't control them. It does mean that in all three policies the refund protects the agency's costs, and your real protection is how easily you can leave.

How to read any SEO guarantee

  • Which metric? Clicks in your own Search Console beat rankings from the agency's own tool
  • Measured against what? A baseline month you both agree on
  • Over what period? Long enough for SEO to work, short enough to be useful
  • What are the conditions? Ones you control, like keeping access shared and the content live
  • What do you get back? A refund, a credit or free months
  • Who decides? Data you can both see, not the agency's own report
  • Can you leave meanwhile? Month to month beats a 12-month lock-in

Leaving matters even when there's no dispute. In the r/SEO thread above, one of the most upvoted practical replies was: "Change all passwords and remove all access to your site and anything else you shared with him." A provider whose terms leave you owning your site, code and domain makes that step easy.

Our guarantee, in full

This is what our terms say, in plain words.

If your Google clicks haven't grown after 6 months on the plan, compared with your first month, we process a refund. The conditions:

  • You've been on the plan and paid for 6 months in a row.
  • We compare Google Search clicks in the sixth month with the first month, in your Search Console.
  • You keep Search Console shared with us for the whole period, so we check the numbers together.
  • You don't remove or block the content we published.

When the 6 months are up, we look at the numbers together. If clicks haven't grown, we review the case and process the refund. The guarantee covers Google Search clicks only; it's the one result we promise, and we don't promise rankings.

Around it: no minimum contract, you can cancel any time by email, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the month you've paid for. The code, prompts, checks and content live in your repo and stay yours, and your domain is registered in your name.

The plan the guarantee sits on costs $300 a month after a $500 first month; the pricing page lists what's in it.

Why we're comfortable offering it

We ran the same comparison on three sites we own and run on this setup: their first full month against September 2026. All three grew, including the one that had a bad September.

Site (first full month)First month clicksSeptember 2026 clicksChange
Game news (May)8,55519,6252.3x
Manhwa and anime (June)2,73620,1917.4x
Card game guides (June)2,4585,5772.3x

The card game site lost about half its clicks between August and September and still finished at more than twice its first full month. That's three sites, not a promise about yours, which is exactly why the guarantee exists.

If you're already with an agency and want to check whether its results hold up, our guide to vetting an SEO agency's case studies in Search Console walks through it, and our SEO content service page has the full plan.
