SEO Retainer Cost: Prices, Hours and Contract Terms
Most SEO providers bill a monthly retainer, and the most common band is $501 to $1,000 (Ahrefs). What it buys in hours, contract terms, and where $300 fits.

In June, someone on r/SEO was pricing SEO for two plumbing businesses on their boss's behalf. "If they had their way they would pay £100 a month, but like they say, you get what you pay for. But then they don't want to pay £5000 a month for something that isn't worth it," they wrote. A local agency had quoted £1,100 for one site and £1,700 for the other, for a site rebuild and SEO, "both on a 24 month contract." The post doesn't say whether those two figures are per month. Either way, the quote raises the two questions this post answers: what a retainer should cost, and how long you should have to sign up for.
| Retainer | Monthly price | Contract | What the page lists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portland Peak SEO | $450, $950 or $2,500 | Month to month, 30 days' notice, no setup or exit fee | Tiers by footprint: one market, several services or up to 5 locations, regional or national reach |
| WebFX Silver | $2,900, after $8,600 for the first two months | 6-month commitment | Up to 30 pages optimized; 6 content, outreach, UX or CRO assets a quarter |
| Digital Elevator Foundation | $3,500 (higher tiers $4,997 and $8,500) | 12-month engagement, 30 days' notice, no early-termination fee; any minimum commitment stated in the proposal | 2 content pieces and 4 link placements a month, account manager, monthly strategy calls |
| Elmrank | $300, after a $500 first month | No minimum contract; cancel any time | Up to 30 articles a month, technical fixes, hosting, domain, monthly report; no link building |
What surveys say a retainer costs
Two surveys ask the question from opposite ends. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers about what they charge. Neil Patel's team surveyed 500 U.S. professionals about what their businesses pay.
The providers' answers cluster low. The most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000 a month (20.4% of providers), 42.8% charge between $501 and $2,000, and 31.2% charge more than $2,000. Ahrefs also gives averages: $3,209 a month for agencies, $3,250 for consultancies and $1,348.63 for freelancers. It built them by assuming everyone charges the top of their price band, so they lean high. Ahrefs doesn't say when it ran the poll; the post first went up in December 2023.
The buyers' answers sit higher. In Neil Patel's survey, published in April 2025, the most common monthly SEO spend is $1,001 to $2,500. Monthly retainers were the most common way to pay, at 27.2%, just ahead of project fees at 26.2%.
WebFX says SEO "costs an average of $1,000 to $5,000 per month for monthly retainers." Siege Media's guide says quality SEO services in 2025 "should cost around $3,000+ per month," with local campaigns in lower-competition markets often around $1,500 to $3,000. WebFX's own packages start at $2,900 a month; Siege's page doesn't list its own price.
What a retainer buys, in hours
One way to read a retainer is in hours, and here Ahrefs contradicts itself. The summary at the top of its post says "The most common hourly rate for SEO is $100-$150, with 25% of SEOs charging this amount." The detailed section further down says $75 to $100 is the most popular rate, at 24% of respondents. Both lines are on the same page, and Ahrefs doesn't explain the difference, so the table below covers $75 to $150. The same section says 90% charge $150 an hour or less, and that agencies average $98.90 an hour.
| Monthly retainer | At $75 an hour | At $100 an hour | At $150 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | about 7 hours | 5 hours | about 3 hours |
| $1,000 | about 13 hours | 10 hours | about 7 hours |
| $2,000 | about 27 hours | 20 hours | about 13 hours |
| $3,209 (Ahrefs' agency average) | about 43 hours | about 32 hours | about 21 hours |
The hours are our arithmetic on Ahrefs' rates, not a figure any agency publishes. Ten hours is about a day and a quarter of one person's time each month, and if the retainer includes a report and calls, those come out of the same hours. Ask how many hours your retainer pays for and who spends them. Our post on what an SEO agency does each month lists the work and where to check it.
A vague retainer is a problem for the provider too. In the same r/SEO thread, a commenter who said their rates start at €80 an hour warned that "you could agree on a set retainer like 2k a month and end up doing too many hours because the retainer agreement was fuzzy."
Contract terms: minimums, notice and fees
The published terms in the table above span the whole range. Portland Peak SEO says "Every plan runs month to month with 30 days' notice, and none carries a setup or exit fee." WebFX's packages start with a two-month "initial campaign" ($8,600 on Silver), then $2,900 a month under a "6 month commitment". Digital Elevator's managed SEO "Runs on a 12-month engagement with a 30-day cancellation notice and no early-termination fee; exact terms are stated in the proposal before signing," and its page adds that "some plans are subject to a minimum commitment, stated in your proposal."
Portland Peak's guide names the costs it tells buyers to refuse: "setup fees, reporting surcharges, per-post charges past an unclear quota, and bought-link fees." Its list of warning signs includes "A minimum term, or a fee just to get started." Portland Peak sells retainers itself, so it has a stake in that list, but each item is easy to check in a proposal.
Before you sign a retainer, get these answers in writing:
- The minimum term in months, and what happens if you leave before it ends
- The notice period, and whether there's an exit or early-termination fee
- Any setup or onboarding fee on top of the first month
- What arrives each month, in numbers: pages, fixes, links, reports
- Roughly how many hours the fee pays for, and who does the work
- That Search Console, analytics, the domain and the content stay in your name
The last line matters most if you leave. Our guide to switching SEO agencies without losing traffic covers what to hand over and what to keep.
Where our $300 fits
Our plan is a retainer too, at the low end of the range. The first month costs $500: a Super Intelligence audit for SEO and GEO, the technical fixes it finds (speed, indexing, schema and site structure), source setup, site design and a content plan. From month two it's $300 a month for up to 30 articles, depending on your niche and needs, plus ongoing technical fixes, hosting, the domain and maintenance. Each month you get a report of what we published, what we fixed, and your Search Console clicks and impressions. Here's a sample report filled in with one of our own sites.
The price is low because most of the work runs through our pipeline, which researches, drafts and fact-checks the articles with AI. A person approves each article before it's published. The plan doesn't include link building, and we work by email, replying within 12 hours, rather than in scheduled strategy calls. If your site needs links or you want a person in your meetings, a retainer like Digital Elevator's, which lists 4 link placements a month and monthly strategy calls, is the better fit.
Siege Media, quoted above for its benchmarks, puts the warning plainly in the same guide: "if you see someone who is charging less than $1,000/mo for SEO, you should run. These companies are often charging you for automated services, which at best do nothing, and at worst (through spammy link schemes or auto-generated content) put your site traffic at risk." At $300, with AI drafting the articles, we're on the wrong side of that line, and you should hold us to it. Two parts of the warning we can answer directly: a person approves every article, and the plan builds no links of any kind. Our post on SEO cost per month for a small business goes through the rest, point by point.
The terms are short. There's no minimum contract, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the month you've paid for. The code and content live in your repo and stay yours, and the domain is registered in your name or account. The one result we promise is a refund if your Google clicks haven't grown after 6 months, under four conditions in our terms:
- you've been on the plan, and paid, for 6 months in a row
- we compare Google Search clicks in the sixth month against the first, in your Search Console
- Search Console stays shared with us for the whole period
- you don't remove or block the content we published
Our terms describe Elmrank as the trading name of an individual based in Vietnam; our founder signs these posts. The pricing page has a calculator that sets our plan against a freelancer, an agency retainer and an in-house writer for the number of articles you want, and the services page lists everything the plan covers.
Questions
What is an SEO retainer?
A fixed monthly fee for ongoing SEO work. In Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers, 78.2% charge this way. The other common models are hourly billing and one-off project fees, and many providers sell more than one.
Is a 12-month SEO contract normal?
It's one of several terms on published price lists. Digital Elevator's managed SEO runs on a 12-month engagement with 30 days' cancellation notice and no early-termination fee. WebFX's packages carry a 6-month commitment. Portland Peak SEO runs month to month. We have no minimum contract. Whatever the length, get the notice period and any exit fee in writing before you sign.
